3 Simple Things That Define Who You Are · Kat&Beyond

Humans are dynamic, and our interests and personality may evolve over time. Our habits and mannerisms may change as well. All these little things we do every day say a lot about who we are whether we like it or not. These the things that define who you are as a person:

How you manage your time

This goes on top of my list! Contrary to popular belief, not all Filipinos follow the so-called “Filipino time,” also known as being shamelessly late to every function. Managing one’s time properly is a crucial skill in adulthood, how one does this says a lot about them as a person.

People who are always late can be described as unorganized, chaotic, often irresponsible, and sometimes lazy. Time is money but they do not seem to have respect for other people’s schedules. On the other hand, people who are on time or even early are usually more professional, neat, and take things more seriously.

How you talk to and interact with other people

Connections, relationships, and human interactions are an important aspect of life. You encounter different types of people every day of your life. The way you talk to and relate to people on a daily basis also determines who you are as a person.

Some people are very friendly and warm towards others no matter who they are speaking to. They can make people feel good and important despite differing social status. Others are not as inviting and may be more shy or reserved. Even so, people who are not as outgoing can still project a certain kind of energy to the people around them.

How you present yourself

As the saying goes, first impressions really do matter. Of course, we should not judge a book by its cover and we should not make hasty judgments based solely on people’s outward appearance. However, we cannot deny that fashion and grooming make an impact on our perception of other people and how others see us.

How you talk to and interact with other people

While there is absolutely nothing wrong with relaxed, casual clothing, there is a time and place for everything. Sometimes, more formal and clean-cut clothes are appropriate. It is better to dress to impress rather than to depress.

In addition to your outfit, it is also important to ensure your hair, teeth, and face are neat and tidy. Your scent and the fragrance you use will also help to make sure you leave a good, lasting impression.

Values and Beliefs

Your values and beliefs are a huge part of your identity and can really influence your actions and decisions. These values might include honesty, compassion, and respect, and they can shape how you approach life and interact with others.

For instance, someone who values honesty might be more likely to speak the truth, even if it’s hard, while someone who values compassion might be more likely to help others and show empathy. These values can be really important to you and can shape your character and personality.

Goals and Aspirations

Your goals and aspirations can give you a sense of purpose and direction in life and shape who you are as a person. These goals can be short-term or long-term and might include career, educational, personal, or other types of aspirations.

Someone might have a goal of becoming a successful business owner, while another person might aspire to complete a degree in a specific field. These goals can drive your actions and motivate you to work towards achieving them.

Life Experiences

Your life experiences can shape your perspective and influence your personality and behavior. These experiences can be positive or negative, and might include things like travel, relationships, and overcoming challenges. For example, someone who has traveled to different countries might have a more open-minded perspective, while someone who has faced significant challenges might have developed resilience and strength.

These experiences can shape your character and can affect how you approach life. In fact, these experiences can often be some of the most influential factors in shaping your identity and personality. They can also provide valuable lessons and insights that can guide your decision-making and behavior in the future.

Personality Traits

Personality traits are characteristics that define your unique personality. These traits might include things like extroversion, agreeableness, conscientiousness, and emotional stability. These traits can be relatively stable over time and can influence your behavior and decision-making.

For instance, someone who is highly extroverted might enjoy being around others and might seek out social situations, while someone who is more introverted might prefer solitude and quieter environments. Personality traits can also interact with your values, goals, and life experiences to further shape your identity and behavior.

Skills and Abilities

Your skills and abilities can define your roles and contribute to your sense of identity. These skills and abilities can be developed through education, training, and experience, and might include things like communication, problem-solving, and technical expertise.

To give an example, someone who is skilled in communication might excel in a customer service role, while someone with strong problem-solving skills might thrive in a job that requires them to find solutions to complex issues. These skills and abilities can be important for personal and professional growth.

Interests and Hobbies

Your interests and hobbies can provide a sense of enjoyment and fulfillment and can be a big part of your identity. These interests and hobbies can vary widely and might include things like sports, music, art, or other creative pursuits.

For example, someone who is passionate about music might spend their free time practicing an instrument or singing, while someone who loves sports might participate in a recreational league. These interests and hobbies can provide a sense of relaxation and can help you feel fulfilled.

Relationships

Your relationships with friends, family, and loved ones can be a big part of who you are and can shape your personality and behavior. These relationships can provide support, companionship, and a sense of belonging.

To give an example, someone who has a close-knit group of friends might feel more supported and connected, while someone with a strong relationship with their family might feel more grounded and secure.

There are many factors that contribute to a person’s identity and personality, and it’s interesting to think about how these different pieces come together to make us who we are. We all have our own unique mix of values, goals, experiences, skills, hobbies, relationships, and more that shape our identities and influence our behavior. It’s important to understand and embrace these different aspects of ourselves in order to live authentically and true to ourselves.

Loving the wrong person is like playing chess with someone who's already rigged the game. It's time to flip the board.
