Marketed as ‘a legend reborn’, the new Huawei P50 is Huawei’s latest offering. For the longest time, I’ve been trying to decide between getting this or a new digital camera. This is because their prices are almost the same, and I was looking for a device that would take excellent photos.
In the end, I decided to get a P50 Pro because if I go to the beach, I can’t submerge a digital cam unless I get a Go Pro. However, a P50 only needs the Lifeproof case – hopefully to be released soon – and then I can take underwater shots!
I got an invitation to the exclusive VIP Preview for the Huawei P50 Pro and P50 Pocket on Jan. 7, 2022. At the preview, Huawei gave guests a Php 2,000 discount as well as exclusive VIP treats. Huawei also had a Walk-In Experience, offering a free Wireless Charging Table Lamp for those who joined.
I decided not to go because of the high number of COVID-19 cases. Luckily when I pre-ordered and mentioned my VIP invite, my freebies were still waiting for me!
Along with my Huawei P50 Pro, I got the cute Wireless Charging Table Lamp; a 10th anniversary gift with a notebook, Bluetooth speaker, and retractable USB carry case; and the Huawei Freebuds Pro.
Elegant Build, Solid Features
The first thing I noticed about the Huawei P50 Pro is the sleek, lightweight design. This slim smartphone is dual-glass and dual-curved, with a thin aluminum frame. The rear glass is also the first high-aluminum lithium glass to be used on a smartphone. This new composition is supposed to make it tougher as well as more resistant to damage.
This smartphone also has 8GB RAM and 256GB for internal storage – plenty of space for installing bulky apps. If you need extra storage space, there’s an additional Nano Memory slot that shares space with your SIM card. This will give you up to 256GB additional space.

The P50 Pro has Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 888 chipset. Note that normally this has 5G support, but Huawei is prevented from buying or making chipsets with 5G modems. If you get the P50, you’ll be relying on Wi-Fi 6 or a 4G LTE connection. Note that instead of the Google Play Store and Google Mobile Services, the phone makes use of Huawei Mobile Services and AppGallery.
High-Quality Cameras Distinguish The Huawei P50 Pro
The P50 Pro’s top-notch design and solid specs are already huge pluses. However, it’s the cameras and photo quality that truly make the Huawei P50 Pro a winner. It has the latest generation Leica camera in a dual-circle setup. It has a rear camera with lossless zoom thanks to combining a Bayer sensor with a 64MP sensor.
Take a photo with its main camera, then see the difference. The ones I took had no noise, with just enough sharpening to give excellent contrast and detail. Huawei’s photo processing results in more balanced, dynamic shots. They’re some of the best photos I’ve ever taken with a smartphone. I can’t wait to see the results once I get a chance to take photos with it underwater.
Another creative feature sure to pique users’ interest is its 40MP monochrome camera – it takes high-quality, dramatic black and white photos. It’s definitely an intriguing feature that creators will have fun playing around with!
Verdict: Great Smartphone With Premium Design
Huawei’s new smartphone is well-made and boasts outstanding features. Even though it doesn’t have 5G connectivity or access to Google Play Services, it has an excellent chipset, a sleek design, and top-notch Leica camera. It’s a solid alternative to similarly-priced smartphones from competing manufacturers!
